Automated attendance is revolutionizing the way schools track student presence, eliminating the need for manual processes and saving valuable instructional time. In this article, we will demystify three popular wireless communication technologies—Bluetooth beacon, near field, and RFID—and shed light on how they can be used to automate attendance. Near Field Communication (NFC):

Near field technology, also known as NFC, enables short-range wireless communication between devices. It operates at a frequency of 13.56 MHz and requires NFC-enabled ID cards or devices for attendance automation. By tapping or bringing these cards or devices close to NFC readers or terminals, attendance can be recorded. However, NFC has a very short range, typically less than 4 centimeters. This means that students must be in close proximity to the reader for accurate attendance recording. While NFC tags are relatively inexpensive, the requirement for physical contact between the badge and reader may be a downside to consider.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID):

RFID technology automates attendance using RFID tags and readers. Each student is assigned an RFID tag with a unique identifier, attached to ID cards or wearable devices. RFID readers are placed at various locations around the campus, capturing attendance as students with RFID tags come into range. Real-time tracking is possible as students move from one location to another with multiple RFID readers installed. However, RFID readers have a limited range, requiring close proximity for accurate recording. Signal interference and misreads may occur, necessitating regular maintenance for system reliability. While RFID tags are cost-effective, the expense of installing readers in every classroom can be a consideration.

Beacon-Bluetooth:

Beacon-Bluetooth is a popular wireless communication technology that facilitates data transfer between devices over short distances. Beacon technology utilizes low-energy Bluetooth (BLE) to transmit signals detectable by compatible devices. These small, battery-powered beacons continuously broadcast signals containing unique identifiers. Students wear these beacons as badges. Proximity sensors strategically placed within the classroom can detect these signals, indicating the presence of individual students. Beacon technology offers a larger range compared to NFC, making it suitable for automating attendance in larger spaces. The range of a beacon varies but is typically around 100-300 feet (30-100 meters). While there are upfront costs involved, such as acquiring beacon badges for each student and installing proximity sensors in classrooms, the hardware expenses are significantly lower than with RFID.

Choosing the Right Technology:

When considering which technology to implement for automated attendance, schools should take into account their budget for hardware, installation, and ongoing license fees for use of the software. Additionally, infrastructure compatibility and customer support should be considered. Each technology has its own advantages and limitations, and understanding these factors will help make an informed decision that aligns with the school's specific requirements and goals.

Automated attendance through the use of wireless communication technologies is undoubtedly the future of tracking student presence in educational institutions. My name is Jeff Pickren and I am a founding partner of ShieldCampus. I am a resident of the Atlanta area, and unfortunately our city fell victim to the latest round of mass shootings on Wednesday, May 3rd.  My heart goes out to the victims of yet another senseless tragedy.  Though the shooting did not take place at a school, many schools in the area were placed into lockdown.  A friend of mine has two children that attend one of these schools.  Somehow his daughter and friends left the school during the lockdown and visited a local coffee shop.  The only reason my friend knew this was because he texted his daughter to ask if she was ok.  She let him know that the school had gone into lockdown, but she had left.

This is ALARMING on multiple levels. 

First, as a former school administrator I can tell you that you would be surprised at how easily and often this happens.  Keeping track of students on campus can be extremely difficult. It’s even more difficult during a crisis.  This can happen at any school!   

Second, it is alarming from a parent’s perspective because when we drop our kids off at school, we assume our children are in the care of the school until we pick them up or when the bus drops them off at home.

Lastly, the lack of communication between the school and parent regarding a student leaving campus is concerning.  A student left campus and there was zero communication alerting the parent that a student was missing during a crisis, and/or the student had checked out.

The unfortunate issue is that there are so many iterations of this kind of story. It’s our jobs as educators to protect our biggest asset…. our students.

Wouldn’t it be beneficial for schools to have a comprehensive solution that addresses the various challenges they face? Consider a scenario where advanced technology is available that enables the administration to promptly monitor every student’s whereabouts on the campus during a crisis. This same technology could facilitate real-time communication with all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, administrators, and first responders to provide an up-to-date account of every student on campus?

That is why we created ShieldCampus.  I was an administrator who faced these issues every day, and it kept me up at night.  We created ShieldCampus to address these very problems.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month which was started in 1949 to increase the understanding of the importance of mental health and wellness. It’s an important time to recognize the significance of mental health in our daily lives, particularly in students.

Since 2020, we’ve been hit with a series of idiosyncratic life events that have taken a toll on our children’s health. Besides the sickness and death brought by COVID-19, we’ve struggled with economic uncertainty, disruption in school and work, and social isolation.

The impact of the pandemic, however, only further heightened an already-existing mental health crisis. Stress, anxiety, depression, and loneliness were already epidemic years before the emergence of the COVID-19. We are not only seeing a higher incidence of mental health issues in our students, but we’re seeing them start at a younger age.

Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how students think, feel, and act, and it influences how they handle stress, make choices, and relate to others.

Mental health is a crucial component of overall health, yet it often goes unnoticed or ignored. As this month provides an opportunity to raise awareness, students suffering from mental health doesn’t stop when May ends.

Poor mental health can have huge negative effects on many aspects of students’ lives, including relationships, academic performance, physical health, and overall quality of life; therefore, schools should incorporate how they identify and manage student mental health within their overall safety plan.

Schools can incorporate the following:

1. Provide awareness: Schools can offer education to help students and staff to understand mental health. The education can help students and staff to learn how to recognize warning signs in themselves and their peers and how to seek help when necessary. Schools can also provide peer support programs. Students can connect with other students who have experienced similar mental health challenges. This can provide a sense of community and support for students who may feel isolated or alone.
2. Create a Mental Health Team: Create a team of mental health professionals who can respond, manage and provide resources for students in need.
3. Create a Crisis Response Plan: Create a crisis response plan that includes steps for responding to emergencies such as suicide threats or other mental health crises. Included should be the responsible parties involved in each step.
4. Promote a Positive School Climate Culture: Create a positive school climate by promoting social-emotional learning, building positive relationships between students and staff, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and support. Some examples of this would be to start a student group whose sole purpose is welcome and support new students. Another group could be formed to make sure no one sits alone at lunch. For students who don’t have many friends, lunch time can be one of the most stressful and lonely times of the day for a student.
5. Leveraging Technology: Implement technology that can streamline how schools identify and manage students with mental health issues.  Technology can also be used to implement positive behavioral intervention and supports (PBIS) within your school using point systems and other rewards.
